Annabel Lee
This has always been my favorite Poe poem! Along with The Raven it is also his most recognized. Could there be a sadder story? This was Poe's swan song to his beloved young wife who died from tuberculosis after 5 long years of struggle and pain. To prepare herself for the read, Jeanne Fontana harkened back to the days when her grandmother used to tell stories. "She could make a story about cooking spaghetti riveting!" When Jeanne finished her astonishing, sensitive read (done all in one take), I was in tears! TEARS I tell you! She just looked at me and said, "Thank you for that." Thank you Jeanne. Of course, the entire piece remains ever so bittersweet due to the wonderful guitar composition composed and played by Bob Westcott.
